Accidental Mountain Climbing

Accidental Mountain Climbing

It was a gentle trail—I thought—to an overlook in Denali National Park.  But the trail turned into a challenging, demanding climb to the top of Mt Healy. We didn’t read the trail guide before going up but the National Park Service says this is one of the steepest trails in the entire Park. The trail is 2.7 miles and the elevation change is 1,700 feet.

The view from the top was amazing. We climbed up above the tree line. We made it! And the stunning thing is that in the following days my legs continue to work!

Here are some thoughts in no particular order:

  1. Surprises can be fun but it’s good to read a trail guide before taking a trail…or making a major life decision.
  2. Look out for those ahead and—especially—those behind you on the trail.
  3. Plant your feet carefully. Hurry can = danger.
  4. When those coming up the trail ask you, hopefully, “Is the steep part over?” be honest. Don’t lie. Every stage of the trail (life) has steepness to it. We’re never done climbing.
  5. Stop along the way. Look around. Look back and out and ahead. Sit on a rock. Breathe. Let your muscles absorb some oxygen.
  6. Hike with others. Don’t take the trail alone. You never know when you’ll be able to help or you’ll need help.

I’m thankful I made the climb (but would not take that trail again).

“Come, follow me,” Jesus says. We never know exactly where the trail will lead us but we know Jesus will be with us as we go.

Our Trustees this Fall will be removing part/all of the concrete basketball court behind the parsonage at 825 Golden Hawk Drive. A year ago I pointed out that the house is a lovely place to live but the concrete backyard means the lead pastor really has no yard or private, outdoor family place.

It will be neither easy nor inexpensive, but this is really a big step in making the house a home for people who like being outside. I wanted you to know what will be happening, why, and that the pastor who initiated this conversation was yours truly and not Pastor Rob (although he and his family are thrilled that they will have a backyard to enjoy).

I have been so appreciative of the grace and generosity you have shown me, both in your words, actions, prayers, and the wonderful parsonage you have provided for my use.

If you haven’t yet signed up to help with Party in the Parking Lot, it’s not too late: please do that today right here!

Join us Sunday for worship at 8:45 or 10:45 (either in-person or online).

Grace and peace,
Mark
