Rev. Dr. Mark Fenstermacher

Lead Pastor

In a fast-changing world where many are disenchanted with organized religion, Pastor Mark believes that a servant community shaped in the image of Jesus of Nazareth, open and welcoming of all people, is the hope of the world. This kind of community is a place where it is safe to be real, to ask questions, to speak of faith, to work through problems instead of running away, to worship with joy and thoughtfulness, and to generously give away our money, our time and our love.

Pastor Mark Fenstermacher was born overseas and grew up on the mission field (with stops in Belgium, the Congo, and northwest Alaska).  A graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington with a double-major in Political Science and Religious Studies, Mark has a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School (Durham, NC) and a Doctor of Ministry in Parish Revitalization from McCormick Theological Seminary (Chicago, IL). Mark has also completed training in intentional, transitional ministry through the UMC at United Theological Seminary.

Over the course of his ministry, Mark has generally served as lead pastor in larger congregations. Among the congregations he has served are Lebanon UMC (Mebane, NC), Mishawaka Coalbush UMC, New Haven UMC in Allen County, 19 years at Elkhart Trinity UMC (as Associate Pastor for 4 years and Lead Pastor for 14 1/2 years), and from 2011-2019 at First UMC in Bloomington for 8 1/2 years.

Mark loves to preach, helping ministry teams grow stronger, and doing what he can to help congregations reflect the love of Jesus Christ for all people. He loves to laugh, is usually reading several books at once, enjoys beaches, and is a fan of IU, Duke, and the Chicago Cubs.  His 1999 silver Mazda Miata (with more than 200,000 miles on the odometer) continues to help him find his smile. Mark has three grown sons and five beautiful grandchildren (spread out from the north side of Chicago to Columbus, Ohio to Alexandria, Virginia).
